Major flooding devastates everything in its path. Houses of course, are no exception. The amount of damage a home suffers depends to a great extent on how much water has entered the dwelling. The higher the water level the more severe the damage will be. The flooring in a house is a bit of an exception to this rule. It can take as little as an inch or two of water covering a laminate floor to wreak havoc on the floor and sub-floor. Damage to the laminate floors of a house can be extensive and expensive to put back in order. The longer that water is left standing on the laminate floor the more severe the damage will be, it will be harder to cleanup the laminate floor water damage.
After all the water has receded and been removed from the house it is time to remove any carpeting or rugs from the building. If at all possible these should be thrown away as they will be saturated with bacteria and toxins from the flood waters. Make sure that all the padding under the carpet is disposed of as it will not be possible to clean it well enough.
Now you have to go through the rooms and take a good look at the floors. In many cases the plywood sub-floors will be saturated and when this happens they will buckle and bow as they dry causing the layers to come apart. If this happens the floors will have to be removed completely and new sub-floor and floors will have to be installed. If the sub-floor hasn't been ruined the restoration of the floors will be less extensive.
Tile or stone flooring will often weather a flood quite well. If the sub-floor beneath the tile is not wet the stone or tile should not have to be replaced. If any tiles are loose reattach them. Make sure the grout has been sealed properly insuring that the sub-floor is dry under it. If everything is dry and solid clean the tile floor with bleach to disinfect and sanitize it.
Vinyl and linoleum flooring that has been submerged in a flood will likely buckle and pull up at the edges making it hard to restore. The sub-flooring under the linoleum will be ruined if it has become saturated with flood water. It is a high probability that the vinyl flooring and plywood sub-flooring will both have to be replaced. If by chance the flood water didn't stand on the floor long enough to saturate the sub-floor the linoleum can be removed, the adhesive under it scraped off and after everything is disinfected and dried out new linoleum or other flooring can be installed.
Wood floors suffer a lot of damage as they begin to dry after a flood. They will swell with water causing buckling and bowing as they dry. Remove a piece of the wood flooring every few feet while the floor is wet and this could help keep the buckling to a minimum. If this works then you can replace the pieces after the floor is completely dry. Clean, sanitize, and disinfect the floor and let it dry. Sand the wood floor and refinish it. If there was significant bowing then the floor will have to be ripped out and replaced.
